此语中的best foot指右脚（right foot）。自古以来人们不管动身去旅行还是跨进门槛，往往先迈右脚,因为先迈左脚被认为是不吉利的。直到今天许多英国新娘在进教堂时仍坚持传统习俗。古希勝哲学家和数学家毕达格拉斯甚至认为每天早上穿鞋也应该先穿右脚。但此语现在已经丧失了本义，转而表示“尽快地走或跑”，“全力以赴”等。
