“坚持”可以译作adhere to, persevere1 in, persist in, hold on to, stick to, keep to等。

Adhere to的意思是“坚持维护，支持”，“信仰坚定”，“忠实于”，如：adhere to principle/belief/ideas/opinion/promise/plan/program, “坚持党的基本路线”可译作adhere to the Party's basic line, “坚持无产阶级国际主义”可译作adhere to proletarian internationalism.

Persevere in 和persist in 一般用于行动，都有"“在困难或遭到反对的情况下坚持”的意思;但persevere in 带褒义，表示“不屈不挠”，而persist in带贬义，表示“顽固，不听开导或劝告”，如：

Perseverance6 means success.

Hold on to的意思是“抓住不放”，用于beliefs, ideas, principles时表示“坚持信仰，坚持原则和观点”，即使他人影响或情况使人产生怀疑，也不改变或放弃，如：

Stick to 的意思是“粘住，不离”;和choice, decision, principle, belief等词连用时，也有“不变，不放弃”，“坚持”的意思。

Keep to 用于decision, belief, rules时有“坚持”的意思。

Keep up的意思是“继续”，如：

在科技英语中常常见到在一个完整的句子后，由especially(或particularly, 下同)引出从句、词组或单词来强调主句的行为或状态的突出表现。怎样翻译这类句子的强调部分呢?请先看下句的三种译文：

比较这三种译文，译文1的缺点在于：原文的叙述方式是从一般到特殊，译文则超越一般情况，直接谈到特殊情况，与原文似有不符。译文2末尾的时间状语悬空，在语法上似无说明对象，读来令人有言有未尽之感。译文3表义正确，句子结构与原文一致，句尾用“如此”二字呼应前文，无句意残缺和语气停滞之感。译文3无疑是较好的，且这一汉译模式似可用于处理类似结构的所有英语句子。下面再举几个例子：

1)The decision to repair is not easy, especially in borderline cases.

作出返修的决定不是容易的，在可修可不修的情况下尤其如此。

2)Many code vessels are fabricated party in the shop and partly in the field, especially boilers4.

许多规范容器的制造，部分是在工厂，部分是在现场进行的，锅炉尤其如此。

3)A visual inspection5 must be done carefully for the materials, especially for those to be used in fabrication of pressure vessels.

必须对材料仔细进行外观检查，对制造压力容器所用材料尤需如此。

4)The shell parts of reactor6 pressure vessels have been often fabricated with formed plates welded together, especially in USA and Japan.
