Chinese New Year's Day's date is calculated according to the Chinese lunar calendar. In 2015 it's Thursday, February 19.

Many people clean their homes to welcome the Spring Festival. They put up the red posters with poetic verses on it to their doors, Chinese New Year pictures on their walls, and decorate their homes with red lanterns. It is also a time to reunite with relatives so many people visit their families at this time of the year.

In the evening of the Spring Festival Eve, many people set off fireworks and firecrackers, hoping to cast away any bad luck and bring forth good luck. Children often receive lucky money. Many people wear new clothes and send Chinese New Year greetings to each other. Various activities such as beating drums and striking gongs, as well as dragon and lion dances, are all part of the Spring Festival festivities.

The Spring Festival is a national holiday in China. Government offices, schools, universities and many companies are closed during the period from the Spring Festival Eve to the seventh day of the first lunar month in the Chinese calendar. However, some enterprises such as banks often arrange for workers to be on shift duty. Public transport is available during the Chinese New Year period.

The red posters with poetic verses on it were initially a type of amulet (驱邪物), but now it simply means good fortune and joy. Various Chinese New Year symbols express different meanings. For example, an image of a fish symbolizes “having more than one needs every year”. A firecracker symbolizes “good luck in the coming year”. The festival lanterns symbolize “pursuing the bright and the beautiful”.

Yours sincerely,

Li Hua

One possible version:

Dear_Editor,

I_am_a_Senior_Three_student._Recently_we_have_carried_out_a_survey—“To_whom_do_you_go_when_in_trouble?”_The_results_are_as_follows.

61% of the students surveyed select friends or schoolmates as their ideal listeners when they have trouble, the reason of which is that they are in the same age group and have a better understanding of each other. Another 22% choose teachers and parents to talk to. They suggest that teachers and parents are rich in life and educational experiences. Nevertheless, there are also 17% who don't share their troubles at all. They say that their troubles are none of others' business. Others find it hard to get along with others.

It is not easy to reach definite conclusions based on such a small example. However, some general comments can be made. It seems clear from the response that some students lack communication with others and teachers and parents need to play a more important role in their lives.

Yours_sincerely,

Li_Hua

[2016·石家庄质检]Most people think about donating blood. However, very few actually do it. Even the most consistent ones donate an average of just three to four times during their lifetime. Now the officials in Sweden are trying to change the trend with the help of modern-day technology.

The encouragement to donate again begins shortly after the donor leaves the clinic when he/she receives a “thank you” text. Though that certainly helps them feel appreciated, what is even more pleasing is the text they receive each time their blood is used to help someone in need.

Karolina Wiberg, manager of the Stockholm blood service, believes this small gesture not only results in repeat donors, but helps bring in new ones. The_program that was started in Stockholm has received such positive feedback that it is now being rolled out across the country.

However, Swedish officials are not stopping there. They are also encouraging local clinics to publish the exact levels of the different blood groups they have at any given time on their websites. This allows potential donors to realize that their blood can make a difference in saving someone's life.

While all these outreach programs are great, busy citizens, even the ones with the best intentions have to be occasionally reminded. In order to jog their memories, officials ask people for authorization to send them text, Facebook, and e-mail reminders. Though that may sound disturbing, the citizens do not seem to mind, given that the messages are light-hearted and fun-things like “We won't give up until you bleed.”

Though Sweden is currently the only country using modern technology to urge more donations, don't be surprised if more join in, especially if the Nordic (北欧) country's blood banks start to overflow!

[2016·荆州一中质检] Generally speaking, government regulations normally ban anything from smoking in public places to parking in certain zones. But officials in the Brazilian town of Biritiba Mirim, 70 km (45 miles) east of Sao Paulo, have_gone_far_beyond_that. They plan to prohibit residents from dying early because the local cemetery (墓地) has reached full capacity.

There's no more room to bury the dead, they can't be cremated (火化) and laws forbid a new cemetery. So the mayor has proposed a strange solution: outlaw death. Mayor Roberto Pereira says the bill is meant as a protest against federal regulations that prohibit new or expanded cemeteries in preservation areas. “They have not taken local demands into consideration”, he claims.

A 2003 decree (法令) by Brazil's National Environment Council forbids burial grounds in protected areas. Mr Pereira wants to build a new cemetery, but the project has been stopped because 98% of Biritiba Mirim is considered as a preservation area.

Biritiba Mirim, a town of 28,000 inhabitants, not only wants to prohibit residents from passing away. The bill also calls on people to take care of their health in order to avoid death. “I haven't got a job, nor am I healthy. And now they say I can't die. That's ridiculous,” Amarido do Prado, an unemployed resident said.

The city council is expected to vote on the regulation next week. “Of course the bill is laughable, illegal, and will never be approved,” said Gilson Soares de Campos, an assistant of the mayor. “But can you think of a better resolution to persuade the government to change the environmental decree that is prohibiting us from building a new cemetery?” The bill states that “offenders will be held responsible for their acts.” However, it does not say what the punishment will be.

is the bill to be proposed by the officials in Biritiba Mirim?

on building a new cemetery.

on parking in certain zones.

idding buried grounds in preservation.

ibiting residents from dying early.

根据首段“They plan to prohibit residents from dying early.”

can we infer from the phrase “have gone far beyond that” in the first paragraph?

officials in Biritiba Mirim have made these regulations.

officials in Biritiba Mirim have been to many places around the world.

bill to be proposed by officials in Biritiba Mirim is much too unexpected.

officials in Biritiba Mirim have built too many cemeteries in their town.

's the attitude of the mayor of Biritiba Mirim towards the federal regulations?

remains silent about them.

gives strong backing to them.

objects to them.

asks the residents for advice on them.

根据第二段“They have not taken local demands into consideration.”

h of the following is TRUE according to the text?

mayor of the town wants to build a new cemetery against federal regulation.

residents of the town sing high praise for the bill.

better resolution of the problems has been thought out.

government is going to change the environmental decree.

根据最后一段“But can you think of a better resolution to...”可知。

lation n.

ibit vt. 禁止

tion n.

culous adj.

gal adj.

... into consideration 把……

uade sb. to do sth.
